    Storelid beats Romme, but no new record

     HAMAR, Norway (AP) -- Kjell Storelid of Norway beat Dutchman Gianni Romme in the men's 5,000-meter speedskating World Cup meet Sunday but was unable to match Romme's world record set last weekend.
     Storelid clocked 6 minutes, 34.40 seconds, four seconds slower than Romme's record at 6:30.63. Skating in the Viking ship Olympic rink, Storelid beat fellow Norwegian Johann Olav Koss' 1994 Olympic record by 0.56 seconds.
     Keiji Shirahata from Japan placed second in 6:35.21, beating pairmate KC Boutiette of the United States, who placed 10th in 6:43.71 on his homemade clap skates.
     Romme was not able to repeat his success from Berlin last weekend. Finishing in 6:36.16, he placed third. However, Romme still leads the World Cup standings with 140 points ahead of Storelid's 125.
     Emese Hunyady of Austria won the women's 1,500 meter in 1:59.28and is second overall with 130 points. World Cup leader Claudia Pechstein of Germany placed second in 1:59.74 and has 135 points.
     Placing third in 2:00.90, Chris Witty of the United States moved to fourth in the World Cup standings with 93 points.
     Germany's Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann, third in the World Cup with 100 points, did not compete at Hamar this weekend.
