Wennemars unable to race after crashNAGANO, Japan (AP) -- Dutch speedskater Erben Wennemars, who separated his left shoulder in the 500-meter race, won't be able to compete in two other Olympic events.
The 23-year-old Wennemars suffered the injury Tuesday when Norway's Grunde Njos crashed into him coming off the final turn. The Dutchman also was entered in the 1,000 and 1,500, but the injury will prevent him from further racing.
Njos, racing on the inside lane, lost his balance and slid under the feet of Wennemars, who flipped into the padding, his upper left arm smashing into the ice beneath the wall.
Wennemars, tied for fifth after the first day of 500 competition, grabbed his elbow and screamed. His skates were removed and he was taken off on a stretcher, with medical personnel holding his left arm straight.
