Friday, December 12, 1997 American women 1-2 in World CupWHISTLER, British Columbia (AP) -- Sondra Van Ert of Ketchum, Idaho and teammate Betsy Shaw of Manchester, Vt., were 1-2 on Thursday in a snowboard World Cup super giant slalom.Von Ert, among the favorites for a giant slalom medal when snowboarding debuts in the Winter Olympics in February, completed the super-G in 1 minute, 7.36 seconds. Shaw's time of 1:09.34 was .51 better than World Cup points leader Karine Ruby of France. Mark Fawcett of Canada won the men's race in 1:02.15, followed by Nicholas Conte of France in 1:02.55 and Jasey-Jay Anderson of Canada in 1:02.66. The top American was Jeff Greenwood of Granby, Conn., sixth in 1:02.91. Steve Persons of Whitefish, Mont., was seventh in 1:03.52. The men and woman have giant slalom races Friday. |
