Bulgarian ice dancer undergoes surgery after practice accident

NICE, France (CP) -- Bulgarian ice dancer Albena Denkova underwent surgery on her left ankle today after being sliced by the skate blade of American Peter Tchernyshev.

Denkova, 25, suffered a deep cut in the free dance practice collision and required surgery to repair muscle damage. She and partner Maxim Staviski, sitting ninth in the standings, were forced to withdraw from the world figure skating championships. The Bulgarians finished 11th in Helsinki last year.

The withdrawal bumped Canadian champions Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon to 10th place from 11th before the free dance.
