Kwan earned three perfect scores of 6.0 for presentation. She skated in a new dress she received earlier in the day, an outfit that her mother altered so it could be ready for the evening competition. "I really enjoyed myself tonight," Kwan said. "I am learning to compete with more joy." Kwan finished ahead of 1995 world champion Yuka Sato. Nicole Bobek was third. Eldredge, a five-time U.S. champion, got the only perfect score in the men's event for artistic merit.
