    Owen could become billionaire

     LONDON (AP) -- England's 18-year-old World Cup star Michael Owen could become soccer's first billionaire, the Daily Mirror reported today.
     The Mirror estimated the value of Owen, who scored one of the most spectacular goals of the tournament during England's second-round loss to Argentina, had soared to at least 50 million pounds ($120 million Cdn).

    FA chairman wants Hoddle to stay

     LONDON (AP) -- The chairman of the English Football Association wants Glenn Hoddle to lead England into the next World Cup despite the team's second-round exit from France '98.
     Keith Wiseman was quoted in today's Sun newspaper as saying England was "in safe hands" with Hoddle as coach.

    Beckham escapes to New York

     LONDON (AP) -- David Beckham will never forget the kick that led to his sending-off in England's World Cup loss to Argentina -- the fans won't let him.
     Beckham, escaping from the media scrutiny, retreated to New York late Wednesday for some soul-searching and a reunion with fiance Victoria Adams -- better known as Posh Spice of the Spice Girls.

    Romanian star retires

     Gheorghe Hagi, the best Romanian soccer player of his generation, retired Thursday from the national team after 16 years -- and a lukewarm performance in the World Cup.
     Known for his superb technical skills and intelligence, Hagi, 33, peaked in the early 1990s.

    Craioveanu banned for next two matches

     PARIS (AP) -- The FIFA disciplinary committee suspended Romanian forward Gheorge Craioveanu for two matches Thursday after he insulted the referee of his team's loss to Croatia.
     After Tuesday's second-round game, won by Croatia 1-0, Argentine referee Javier Castrilli reported that Craioveanu insulted him.
