Craioveanu banned for next two matches
PARIS (AP) -- The FIFA disciplinary committee suspended Romanian forward Gheorge Craioveanu for two matches Thursday after he insulted the referee of his team's loss to Croatia.
After Tuesday's second-round game, won by Croatia 1-0, Argentine referee Javier Castrilli reported that Craioveanu insulted him.
FIFA spokesman Keith Cooper said the committee normally takes only a day to decide on discipline, but because the insults were made after the match, they were not in the game report. A separate report had to be filed before the committee could decide on Craioveanu's actions.
The suspension will be enforced in the qualifying rounds for the 2000 European Championship starting later this year.
