Vogts criticizes FIFA
STUTTGART, Germany (AP) -- German coach Berti Vogts, who in his playing days as a defender
earned the nickname "terrier" for his dogged pursuit of rival forwards, is criticizing FIFA for
outlawing the sliding tackle.
"The decision was made by people who are 70 years old," Vogts said Monday as the German
team gathered for Wednesday's World Cup warmup against Brazil.
FIFA, soccer's world governing body, wants the referees at the World Cup in France this
summer to punish every sliding tackle with a red card. FIFA says it is attempting to protect the
game's top stars.
FIFA's move has met with mixed reactions in Germany, where many players and coaches say the
sliding tackle is an integral part of the game.
"We have to adjust ourselves now. We must use quicker defenders," Vogts said.
