BASEBALL NOTETuesday, November 25, 11:08 AM*Eric Davis named 1997 Tony Conigliaro Award winner* ---------------------------------------------------- Baltimore Orioles outfielder Eric Davis, who battled colon cancer and returned to play this season, today was named the 1997 recipient of the eighth-annual Tony Conigliaro Award. The Conigliaro award is presented to a major-league player who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and courage that were trademarks of the former Boston Red Sox and California Angel, who died in 1990 after an eight-year struggle to overcome a massive heart attack that left him severely handicapped. Davis, who has also been awarded the Roberto Clemente and Hutch Awards, received 10 first-place votes and one second for 53 points. Darren Daulton of the Philadelphia Phillies and Florida Marlins picked up the other first-place vote and was second with 23 points. Davis batted .304 with eight home runs and 25 RBI in 158 at-bats this season. He returned late in the regular season and competed in the postseason despite undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Past winners of the Tony Conigliaro Award include Curtis Pride, Scott Radinsky, Mark Leiter, Bo Jackson, Jim Abbott, Dickie Thon and Jim Eisenreich.
