Travel guide Fodor’s selection of the top 100 hotels in the world spans the globe from Botswana to India to Tasmania, as well as addresses diverse tastes, with properties ranging from luxury, eco-friendly treehouses in the backwoods of Sweden, to “straight-friendly” accommodations.

Released November 14, the second annual ranking from the 74-year-old brand whittled down a global nomination list of 4,000 hotels from 41 countries across nine categories which editors say represent the hottest trends in the industry.

In the Trendsetting category, for example -- defined as hotels that are changing the hospitality landscape -- editors tipped their hats to The Out in New York City, whose cheeky tagline of being “straight-friendly” caters to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community – the city’s first.

Treehotel in Sweden was also singled out for pushing the envelope in eco-friendly properties, with everything from mirrored camouflage cubes and replica bird’s nest units perched up to 6 meters above ground in the treetops.

In the New and Noteworthy category, editors singled out the opening of Toronto’s Shangri-La hotel for focusing on art installations and for being home of celebrity chef David Chang’s first Canadian outpost of his Momofuku empire.

Meanwhile, the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, a hotel that dates back to 1876, also made the list for being a global icon and landmark hotel. The 136-year-old property is considered an institution in the city and sets the bar when it comes to luxury accommodations, editors said.

Likewise, the Hotel Bellagio in Las Vegas was dubbed a global icon for being an instantly recognizable property and attracting guests to its equally renowned restaurants Michael Mina and Le Cirque.

Other categories include Trip of a Lifetime; Local Experience; City Chic; Royal Pedigree; Fun for All Ages and Best All-Inclusive.
