Surfers hit the waves on International Surfing Day

, Last Updated: 10:01 AM ET

Surfers around the world will take to the waves to celebrate their sport on International Surfing Day, now in its tenth edition.

In 2004, EuroSIMA (European Boardsports Industry Manufacturers Association) launched the event, which is supported by the European Surfing Federation (ESF), as well as Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) and Surfrider Foundation Europe.

To add a bit of confusion, the International Surfing Day micro site lists the celebration as June 20, while EuroSIMA's site sets the day as June 23. Either way, events are taking place throughout the week and throughout the world, so check both sites for what's taking place in your area.

Last year nearly 200 events took place in more than 30 countries around the globe, and this year expects the same, as surfers and paddle-boarders mobilize for a celebration of free concerts, surf lessons and demos, parties, beach clean-ups, and contests.
