Canada's top brewery tours for St. Patrick's Day

Beer plays a huge role in many Canadian’s Saint Patrick’s Day plans. While you’re dressed up in green, and donning shamrocks, why not consider adding a beer brewery tour to your festive plans. Book early as tours fill up fast and most limit the number of tours offered each day. Check out a few of these breweries across Canada from across Canada.

Granville Island Brewery, British Columbia

The Taproom offers samples from all Granville Island beers, including the latest Limited Release. You can even enjoy them with some light fare food pairings. The tour offers an up close watch through a glass wall directly into the brewery where you can catch a glimpse of Brew master Vern doing what he does best. There are three daily tours offers - noon, 2pm and 4pm until May 2014. Tours are limited to ten people and are booked on a first-come, first-served so make sure to call ahead.

Steamwhistle Brewery, Ontario

Learn how Canada's Premium Pilsner is made, meet the brewery’s friendly staff, enjoy a sample of their beer and learn how the railway history helped inform their name. Your experience includes a guided tour of the brewery, a sample of craft Pilsner and your choice of a take home souvenir or a case of beer. Reservations must be made a minimum of twelve hours in advance Monday through Thursday, and are on a first-come-first-served basis on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Call for tour times and information.

Big Rock Brewery, Alberta

Visit the ‘beerologists’ at the Big Rock Brewery for an hour tour and sample their craft beers. You'll learn about the brewing process using all your senses, from the unloading of ingredients, through the brewing and fermentation stages, all the way to the packaging facility. Before you say goodbye, you'll enjoy a Big Rock tasting session and then make one last stop, at the retail store, where you can leave with a Big Rock pint glass to keep. Brewery tours are available Tuesday through Thursday, and Saturdays with afternoon tours at 1:30 pm and more tours available in the evenings.

Garrison Brewing Company, Nova Scotia

Come explore the brewery that brought craft beer to Nova Scotia. Take a tour and learn how Garrison got started, how they consistently make some of the area’s most favourite beers, and how they continue to brew a variety of all natural, preservative-free ales. Book a tour on Saint Patrick’s Day and sample their flagship Irish Red Ale in tribute to all things Irish, or any of the other year-round brews in their fantastic location right at the Halifax seaport.

Yukon Brewing, Yukon

Take a trip up north and visit a brewery that pride themselves on experimenting with different ingredients in their brews. Think of raspberries, honey or even orange peels as possible brew ingredients, and be prepared to let your taste buds be delighted in new and wonderful ways. Tours are offered at 2 pm Monday through Saturday from Labour Day to Victoria Day, and will take you through the entire brewery explaining the brewing, fermentation, filtering, and packaging components of making these individual craft beers, with a number of samples available at the end.

The Montreal Brewpub Experience, Quebec

For the more adventurous beer lovers out there you should check out The Montreal Brewpub Experience. It is a two-kilometer walking tour through some of the greatest neighbourhoods in Montreal, visiting three different craft beer breweries and sampling a variety of beer styles along your travels. Sample a total of six different but all great tasting beers while you explore new neighbourhoods. Tours run rain or shine but must be booked in advance.

So gather your fellow beer loving friends and let your taste buds savour the various craft beers that are becoming a Canadian staple. And don’t be surprised to discover a new favourite beer to add to your repertoire.
