A video starring sports megastars Kobe Bryant and Lionel Messi in a "selfie shootout" was officially bestowed with the title of most viral celebrity spot 2014 for clocking more than 137 million hits since first airing last year.
If you aren't one of the more than 137.2 million people to have seen "Kobe vs. Messi: The Selfie Shootout," video by Turkish Airlines, here's what the one-minute commercial entails: two of the most powerful sports stars in the world engage in a friendly battle of selfie one-upmanship, in which the rivals take photos of themselves against some of the most iconic landmarks around the world.
The commercial, by Crispin Porter + Bogusky, was created to promote Turkish Airlines' global network and includes selfie shots at Moscow's Red Square, The Great Wall of China, the Maldives, Bangkok and Mount Kilimanjaro.
In the ad's final shot, Messi takes a selfie in Istanbul only to be photobombed by Kobe.
The spot was awarded the title of Most Viral Celebrity Spot in Advertising Age's 2014 Viral Video Awards in New York earlier this month.
For comparison, according to travel trade site Skift, the next most viral airline video was WestJet's Christmas miracle ad, which has attracted about 35.7 million views since being uploaded last December.
After passengers confided their Christmas wishes to a virtual Santa before their flight, a guerilla team of Santa's elves were dispatched to make the flyers' wishes come true. When the passengers deplaned a few hours later, they were greeted with a parade of wrapped presents that were sent down the airport version of the chimney: the baggage carousel.
