London is the top city for striking the right balance between work, play and quality of life, according to a new report that looks at "cities of opportunity."

It's the first time that the British capital posted the highest score in Pricewaterhousecooper's sixth annual report, a ranking that highlights the most energetic, innovative and livable destinations.

Of the 30 cities studied, London took the top spot in three of the 10 key categories, more than any other: technology readiness, city gateway and economic clout.

After London, New York and Singapore also ranked among the top cities of opportunity. Rounding out the top five highest-performing cities are Toronto and San Francisco.

Top-ranked cities are defined as embodying the energy, opportunity, and hope that draw people to city life.

The 10 indicators fall under a trio of overarching ideas: "forward-looking tools" in education and technology; quality of life; and the ability to pay the bills for it all.

"Cities are increasingly competing for talent and are working hard to capture the promise of growth from the many opportunities in today's rapidly changing world," said PwC's US chairman Bob Moritz in a statement.

"As a result, people are looking for more potential for personal opportunity while demanding critical elements to increase quality of life. It's the top ranking cities in this year's study that are demonstrating the foresight that is needed to adapt, stay competitive and thrive for a sustainable positive future."

To compile the ranking, authors culled data from public sources such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the US Census Bureau and National Statistics in the UK.

Other cities to top key indicators include Paris, in the category of intellectual capital and innovation; Sydney for demographics and livability; and Stockholm for health, safety and security.
