WestJet brings a 'Christmas Miracle' to the Dominican Republic

Christmas came early for residents of Nuevo Renacer, Dominican Republic, after they were chosen as this year’s recipients of WestJet’s Christmas miracle.

In a video posted to YouTube on November 30, residents can be seen asking Santa for an item on their wish lists.

And it seemed no item was too big or too small for the jolly ol’ elf to deliver. Not even a horse.

After all the wishes had been made, a team went to work gathering gifts and bringing a truly Canadian Christmas to the tropical locale – complete with snowball fights.

“We chose to shoot the video this year in the Dominican Republic, because we’ve been working with our partners Live Different there, since 2012 and we’ve really got to know the residents,” WestJet sponsorship manager Corey Evans said in a video.

“It’s really important to us that we’re a part of the long-term development of this area and its residents.”

Bringing the spirit of the season to the community was no easy feat – the Calgary-based airline sent 20 employees, who worked alongside 40 local residents and the charity Live Different.

Hidden cameras captured all the magic.

Last year, the airline made holiday wishes come true for some lucky passengers, whose wishes were jotted down in-flight and received at the baggage claim when they arrived at their destination.

This year's video has already been viewed more than 31,000 times.
