How to find the best summer airfare deals

If you haven't already booked your summer holiday, air travel experts say it's not too late to find a cheap flight. In fact, it might be just the right time.

After combing through 11,000 airfares between June 21 and September 22, 2014, the number crunchers over at have come up with a slew of tips on how to score the cheapest plane ticket for air travellers.

Chief among their tips? Avoid flying on the weekends and instead book a flight midweek. According to the summer flight index, flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday -- the cheapest days to fly -- is $78 cheaper than flying on a Sunday.

For a family of four, that adds up to $315 -- the cost of a car rental for a week.

Likewise, if you haven't already booked your summer travel, turns out the best fares for summer can be found in August.

Here are some general rules for finding the best fares, according to online booking site

1. The cardinal rule: Book as early as possible.

2. Be flexible with your travel days and avoid weekends.

3. Mix and match airlines to get the cheapest flights or best schedules.

4. Check alternate airports.

5. Be realistic: travelling on long weekends is going to be more expensive than other weekends.

6. If you see a good deal, snap it up or risk losing out.

7. Pay baggage fees in advance.

On the flipside, you might want to book now as the experts recommend buying tickets around 54 days in advance to score the best fare.

Some key dates to keep in mind: Wednesday, August 27 is the cheapest day to fly out for the Labour Day long weekend. Thursday, August 28 is also an average of $30 cheaper than leaving on a Friday.
