Baby, it ‘s seriously cold outside. Mother Nature has been extra harsh this year and nobody would blame you if you needed to take a break from it all. If the winter blues, blahs and brrrrs are getting you down, why not join this year's flock of snowbirds and head to Florida, known for its sun, sand, relaxing vacations and best of all, discounts for its neighbours north of the border! The sunshine state is a big place, so to help narrow it down for you, here are some helpful hints.

Orlando

Orlando is a no brainer for anyone thinking about going to Florida with the kids. Home to the Epcot Centre, Disney World, Disney Golf, Disney Fantasyland, Disney resorts and restaurants, Orlando is definitely Florida’s playground. If unrelenting Disney magic isn't your thing, Orlando also offers a fine selection of golf courses, like those at the award winning Villas of Grand Cyprus hotel and resort. Or check out an NBA Orlando Magic game while you’re there. Tickets range in price from the reasonable ($35) to the shocking ($1,800), and you should definitely book ahead.

Miami

If the nightlife is your thing then Miami is the place to be. There are hundreds of clubs to choose from, ranging from Cuban salsa to classic rock. To figure out which hotspot you is right for you, check out the Miami New Times or Miami Living magazine. If, on the other hand, you prefer to end your night when the club-goers are just starting theirs, Miami can also offer rest, relaxation and excellent people watching on its miles of warm sandy beaches. Be sure to visit the Biscayne National Park, home to hundreds of species of fish, rare plant life, manatees, pelicans and turtles. The majority of the park is under water so renting a boat is the best way to experience all four ecosystems. And if you’re travelling with kids, the park hosts a free Family Fun Fest every second Sunday, December through April.

Naples

Taking it down a notch from bustling Miami, Naples has the same sun and sand but with a less frenetic pace. The Doubletree Hilton is known for incredible service and enjoys easy proximity to the Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park on the Gulf of Mexico. This very popular park is home to one of the best beaches in the area boasting clean, white sand, calm waters and enough hiking, kayaking, and nature-watching opportunities to keep you and your family busy all day.

Amelia Island

Nestled up close to the Georgia border, Amelia Island has all the amenities we have come to expect of Florida, blue skies, beaches, golf and wildlife while also offering beachside horseback riding and carriage rides. Amelia is a perfect place for a relaxed family or couples weekend away. For a high-end treat, consider staying at the oceanfront Elizabeth Pointe Lodge. Its turn-of-the-century decor and Jacuzzi tubs are sure to please. For a romantic week away they offer a “honeymoon in a lighthouse” experience complete with champagne, roses and a private 180˚ view of the ocean.
