A US theme park has laid claim to a string of records, debuting a thrill ride it claims features the tallest, steepest drop, and the fastest ride for a wooden roller coaster.

Thrill seekers took the Goliath for its maiden spin last week at Six Flags Great America, located between Chicago and Milwaukee.

The wooden roller coaster is billed as the fastest of its kind, traveling at speeds of up to 116 km/hr.

It also lays claim to boasting the tallest drop for a wooden roller coaster -- 55 metres -- and the steepest drop, at an incline of 85 degrees.

In other thrill ride news, Six Flags New England in Massachusetts recently opened what it's calling the tallest swing ride, for lifting riders up 40 storeys in the sky before entering spin mode.

When The Skyscraper opens in 2016 in Orlando, the vertical roller coaster will also lay claim to being the tallest in the world at 174 metres.
