    When silver just won't do it

     A day-long journey home still couldn't take any of the sting away from a gold medal lost.
     Team Canada arrived back in the country yesterday from the World Junior Hockey Championship in Czech Republic, proud of what they'd accomplished in earning the silver medal but clearly dejected at not bringing back the top prize that they and a whole nation had longed for.

     PARDUBICE, Czech Republic -- One day, perhaps tomorrow or in six months or 10 years, the Canadian juniors will look back on their silver medals from the 2002 world junior championship and be proud of their accomplishment.
     But in the minutes following a wrenching 5-4 loss to Russia in the gold-medal game yesterday, that feeling was missing.

    Shades of '72

     PARDUBICE, Czech Republic -- History is not lost on a group of Canadian teenagers, most of whom were 10 years from being in swaddling clothes or their mothers' wombs when the whole Canada-Russia rivalry kicked off nearly 30 years ago.
     The Canadian world junior team knows it is about to become another link to the Summit Series, the eight-game set between Canada and Russia in September 1972 won on Paul Henderson's goal past a fallen Vladislav Tretiak that permanently has a place in Canada's hockey psyche.

    Finland defeats Switzerland

     PARDUBICE, Czech Republic (CP) -- Finland breezed past Switzerland 5-1 to take the bronze medal at the world junior hockey championship Friday.
     Canada and Russia were to meet in the gold medal game later in the day.
